Irrespective of the career path that you choose, at some point you may be required to write grant applications, business plans, funding bids etc. Developing an understanding of resources and funding are part of what might be termed as ‘commercial awareness’ and this is sort by employers outside of academia and within academia. A vitae survey of employers perceptions of PhDs  showed that ‘commercial awareness’ was the skill that employers felt PhDs most lacked. During the many workshops I have run, many early career researchers say that they would agree with this statement. See here for information about what commercial awareness involves and how to develop this skill further in different contexts.

At QM there are a number of opportunities to develop commercial awareness including events run by The Learning Institute.

The ORS Immersion Programme provides a unique opportunity for outstanding students from all backgrounds to gain experience as a business consultant, acquire an insight into bio-business and build a strong network with other high-caliber peers and industry professionals. It is an opportunity to contribute to industry by solving a real life business problem.

If you are interested, you will need to act fast as the deadline for application is 5th June 2012. Click here for more details.
