Interested in working in the City? April 9, 2010

Increasingly, I see early career researchers from quantitative fields such as physics and computer science, wanting to work in the city. Some companies such as Boston Consulting Group and Bank of England do have programmes for PhDs (in quantitative subjects and economics respectively) but other companies recruit PhDs to their graduate training programmes. Although this can be frustrating as many PhDs have spent four years researching/studying after their degree, anecdotally is seems that PhDs get promoted relatively quickly.

So for those considering a career in the  City, I thought you should be aware of a brilliant course which is run by The Careers Group.  It is called the City Course and runs from 13 – 17 September 2010. The application deadline is 5pm, Friday 11 June 2010.

Here is the information from The Careers Group:

If you’re thinking about a career in the City or want to know what it is like working in a fast-paced environment, the City Course is able to answer this and more.

The programme covers investment banking, management consultancy, accountancy, commercial law, risk management and more.

During the week you will visit various different City employers and institutions. There, you will take part in a number of employer led skills session plus listen to presentations and graduate panels about various City careers. At each employer visit you will get the opportunity to meet and network with recent graduates working within the firm, representatives from the graduate recruitment teams and occasionally more senior employees. It’s a lot of early starts and late finishes but it’s a very rewarding and enjoyable course!

Organisations involved this year include:

*     Accenture
*     Financial Services Authority
*     HSBC
*     Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales
*     Kaplan Financial
*     Nomura
