Increase your Research Impact Factor! February 28, 2012

As many of you know, the impact of your research is becoming increasingly important. 20% of the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) will be dedicated to looking at the  impact of  your research and this will increase in for subsequent assessments. Part of making an impact relates to whether your research reaches a wide enough audience and so we are seeing an increasing number of ‘media-savvy’ academics on the television, on-line and on radio.

With the above agenda in mind, it might be worth considering a British Science Association Media Fellowship.  The fellowships are open to  scientists, social scientists, clinicians and engineers from different backgrounds and stages of their career.

For all the Queen Mary Post Docs that read this blog…we need 10 minutes of your time please.

As I mentioned in my last post, knowing the right people is essential if you want to develop your career in academia or elsewhere. With this in mind, Loughborough University is looking at your experiences of career advice, focusing particularly on help that may (or may not) be available to you from informal contacts and work relationships.

They will donate £1 to a charity, if you complete the questionnaire.

To have a look at the letter of invitation click here.

To fill out the questionnaire click here.

Thanks in advance……. if you take the time to complete this!

What does it take to become a successful academic? June 30, 2010

For many Early Career Researchers, their natural goal is to aim ultimately for an academic position. What does one need to do now to stand a good chance of securing a tenured academic position?

Vitae offer some useful advice on this subject. The bad news is that up to 90% of researchers who want to get into academia will have to give up their attempt sooner or later!

The article then offers some advice and comments on how to ensure that you are in the 10% that do succeed. In essence the key factors that will aid your progress are:

  • Luck!
  • An ability to build relationships with well-connected people.
  • A deep, obsessive passion for your research…perhaps, even to the exclusion of everything else in your life!
  • Papers i.e. a good publication record.
  • Experience of teaching….most lectureships will require you to teach. If you want to ‘just do research’ it may be time for a reality check.
  • Being able to simultaneously pursue your project work as well as your own personal research.

I often speak to PhD students and postdoctoral researchers that want to progress in academia. Some doubt that they have the creativity required to think of their own research ideas.

If this is your concern, come along to the next ImpactQM Masterclass. The Masterclass will explore the nature and nurture of creativity with a particular emphasis on invention.

Tools and techniques will be described that can help nurture creative thinking leading to new inventions, and there will be lots of opportunity to practice some of these tools in small teams in the session. The master-class will also describe some aspects of the timing of new inventions and an extraordinary approach to invention pioneered many years ago in Russia that has recently gained worldwide interest.

The class will be given by Dr. Kevin Byron who has worked in both academia and industry and is now the Enterprise Education Co-ordinator at Queen Mary .

Fellowship Day at Queen Mary: 21st April 2010 April 15, 2010

Next Wednesday 21st April is a very important day if you are a PhD student or postdoctoral researcher that is serious about becoming an academic.

Dr. Ian Forristal has organised a Fellowship Day between 12.00 and 18.00 on Wednesday 21st April in the Skeel/PP1/PP2 Lecture Theatre and Peoples Palace foyer, Mile End. There will be respresentatives from The Wellcome Trust, EPSRC, The Royal Society, MRC, BBSRC and Leverhulme talking about writing fellowship applications.

To make the move from a postdoctoral position to a lecturer it is extremely important to illustrate that you can successfully write grant applications and obtain money from funding bodies. Applying for fellowships from organisations such as those attending the Fellowship day is one of the key ways to move from junior research positions (e.g. postdoctoral positions) to more senior academic positions (e.g. lecturer).

Click here for more information about writing fellowships.
